Glossary of Terms

The following is a list of definitions to help you with what you might not understand.

Mature Age

Persons over 40 years of age.

Skills Recognition

(Also known as Recognition of Prior Learning and Recognition of Current Competencies.) Process by which skills obtained through formal training, work experience or life experience is recognised and credit is granted toward achieving the relevant qualification.

COT

Contract of Training

RTO / Registered Training Organisation

A training organisation registered by the Office of Vocational Education and Training as nationally recognised for the provision of vocational education and training products and services.

Apprentice

A person contracted to an employer to learn about a trade and acquire new skills through practical experience at work and off-the-job training with a training provider.

Qualification

The formal certification issued by a Registered Training Organisation under the Australian Qualification Training Framework, stating that a person has achieved all the requirements for a qualification as specified in a nationally endorsed Training Package or accredited course.

Trainee

Similar to an apprentice, but usually in a non-trade area. Training can be on-the-job, off-the-job or a combination of both.

Training Contract

A legal contract for an apprenticeship/traineeship, made between the apprentice/trainee and the employer which is registered with the State Government.

Electronic system that monitors workplace skills and reports apprentice or trainee work experiences

Electrotechnology

VTE

Vocational Education and Training

On-the-job training

The trainee or apprentice is exposed to a range of situations in a workplace to gain experience and practice what they have learned

Off-the-job

The trainee or apprentice gets technical training, usually in a classroom environment. This could be weekly, fortnightly or in a block of weeks.
